Sea of Galilee Boat (Ancient Galilee Boat)
What Was Found
An ancient fishing boat discovered in 1986 on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee near Kibbutz Ginosar during a period of low water levels caused by drought. The boat was found by brothers Moshe and Yuval Lufan, members of Kibbutz Ginosar who were amateur archaeologists. The vessel measures 8.27 meters (27 feet) long and 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) wide and dates to the first century BCE to first century CE based on pottery, nails, and carbon-14 analysis. It is constructed primarily of cedar planks with oak frames, using the mortise-and-tenon technique. The boat is the type of vessel that would have been used for fishing and transportation on the Sea of Galilee during the time of Jesus and his disciples, many of whom were fishermen (Matthew 4:18-22). While there is no evidence connecting it to any specific biblical figure, it provides a tangible example of the boats described in the Gospels. The boat underwent a lengthy conservation process and is now displayed at the Yigal Allon Museum at Kibbutz Ginosar.
