Matthias
Apostle · Replaced Judas
Matthias was chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot as the twelfth apostle. Peter explained the qualification: the replacement must be someone "which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us" — in other words, a witness of Jesus's entire public ministry and resurrection (Acts 1:21-22). Two candidates were nominated: Joseph called Barsabas (also named Justus) and Matthias. After prayer, they cast lots "and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles" (Acts 1:26). Nothing more is recorded about Matthias in scripture. His selection demonstrates that the early church considered the number twelve significant enough to formally restore it, and that there were more eyewitnesses of Jesus's ministry than just the original Twelve.
